LAS FORMAT
LAS 3.0 and LAS 2.0 in Log Digitize
In short
- Log Digitize exports LAS 2.0 and LAS 3.0, and imports both.
- LAS 2.0 is the widely supported single-table format. LAS 3.0 can hold a log table and named data sets, such as formation tops, in one file.
- When a LAS 3.0 file has other data sets (core, perforations and similar), the log table and tops are read and the rest are listed and skipped.
Export
From the digitizer, choose Export LAS 2.0 or Export LAS 3.0 for the selected curves. In LogPlot Studio, the export menu has LAS 2.0 (curves + tops) and LAS 3.0 (curves + tops). Batch export and the correlation chart export offer both versions as well.
A LAS 3.0 file from Log Digitize is comma-delimited. The curves are written in ~Log_Definition and ~Log_Data | Log_Definition. LogPlot Studio exports also add ~Tops_Definition and ~Tops_Data | Tops_Definition for formation tops. The ~Version and ~Well sections carry the version, null value and well header such as company, field, location and API number.
Import
Open a LAS 2.0 or LAS 3.0 file in LogPlot Studio. LAS 3.0 files can use space, comma or tab delimiters and wrapped data. The first log data set becomes the well's log, a tops data set becomes formation tops, and any other named data set is listed in the import notes and left out.
Which version should I use?
- LAS 2.0 when the receiving software only reads the classic single-table format.
- LAS 3.0 when you want formation tops stored in the same file as the curves, or when your workflow already uses LAS 3.0.
Check how your target software reads LAS 3.0 before relying on it; support varies between programs.
