GUIDE
How to make a well correlation chart online
In short
- Open the logs of two or more wells in LogPlot Studio and switch on the correlation chart.
- Pick formation tops in each well; shared top names are connected between wells.
- Export the finished chart as an image, PDF or PowerPoint slide.
Steps
- Open the wells. In LogPlot Studio, open LAS, Excel or CSV logs, or send in curves you digitized. Open two or more wells.
- Arrange the tracks. Choose the curves and scales for each well, for example gamma ray, resistivity and porosity tracks.
- Pick formation tops. Pick a top at a depth in each well and give it the same name in every well you want connected.
- Correlate. Turn on the correlation chart. Lines are drawn between matching tops, and the zones between tops can be filled.
- Flatten on a datum. Choose a top as the datum to hang the wells from, which shows thickness changes across the section.
- Export. Export the chart as PNG, PDF or a PowerPoint slide, or export the tops and logs as data.
What to look for
- Zones that thicken or thin between wells.
- Tops that converge to a point where a unit pinches out.
- Consistent log character within a zone across wells.
Good practice
Use the same top names in every well and keep the depth reference (measured or subsea) consistent. Correlation lines are an interpretation, so check them against the logs.
Common questions
How many wells can I correlate?
Two or more wells can be placed on one chart.
Can I use data from scans?
Yes. Digitize a scan, send it to LogPlot Studio and correlate it with LAS data.
